The Alley House uses an innovative slab manufactured by Legalett, known as a shallow frost, protected slab. The typical home slab in Indianapolis and areas with similar climates consists of concrete footers, and concrete foundation walls that must be buried up to two feet below the frost line, followed by a concrete slab. The foundation the Alley House uses, sometimes referred to as a floating slab, is unique in this climate due to having no footers or foundation walls, only a concrete slab that “floats” in a bed of insulation. This allows the Alley house to use less concrete, decreasing the carbon emissions and allows the team to construct the foundation quicker and with less site disruption.
