Dr. Debbie Shang, Associate Professor of Anthropology, and Visiting Scholar at the Center for Middletown Studies, will discuss her research on local homeschooling practices on Feburary 28, 3:30 PM, in Burkhardt Room 222. Shang will discuss the ways in which homeschooling is disembedded from school space but deeply embedded in the local community. Homeschooling in Muncie is a collaborative effort of faith communities, non-profit organizations, colleges and foundations. Dr. Shang will also share stories and challenges in her fieldwork as well as reflections on differences between Muncie experience and her previous one in Boston a decade ago. Homeschooling research provides a lens through which we can reconsider some key issues, including: What is the meaning of education? What counts as educational success? What is the role of college and non-profit organizations in community revitalization?
