In today’s evolving world, equipping educators with the skills to teach sustainability is essential. This semester, pre-service elementary teachers in EDEL 350 and EDRD 350 accepted that challenge, creating interdisciplinary units inspired by one or more of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These units blend language arts instruction with science, social studies, math, and art, while tackling real-world issues like consumption and production patterns, water pollution, and hunger.
In June 2025, we will publish these innovative units online, making them freely available to educators everywhere. Each unit includes:
- Standards-based lesson plans that integrate multiple subject area;
- Curated text sets featuring fiction, nonfiction, poems, songs, and readers theater scripts; and
- Classroom-ready materials such as graphic organizers, hands-on activities, and reflection tools.
By sharing their work, these pre-service teachers are contributing to a growing movement of educators committed to teaching for a sustainable future. Whether you’re an elementary teacher, curriculum designer, or education advocate, these units will provide inspiration and practical resources to bring sustainability into your classroom. Stay tuned for the official release in June 2025!
