However, in 1938, <a href=\"https:\/\/britishseafishing.co.uk\/the-coelacanth-the-fish-that-came-back-from-extinction\/\">Marjorie Courtenay-Latimer<\/a>, a museum employee at East London, South Africa, was looking over a local fisherman\u2019s catches of the day, discovered a large, unidentifiable fish, with dark scales and light spots.<\/p>\n<p>The term, \u201cLiving Fossils\u201d was coined by Charles Darwin, to describe species that have not changed much from their ancestors that have been fossilized. The coelacanth is an example of this, but plants such as the ginkgo, and even many species of shark, can fit this definition. Studying living fossils is important in determining relationships between species and when new species could have emerged from two different species mating, and <a href=\"https:\/\/news.yale.edu\/2024\/03\/04\/study-slowly-evolving-living-fossils-reveals-key-genetic-insights\">give researchers insight into how certain genes have existed for millions of years.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ocean.si.edu\/ocean-life\/fish\/coelacanth\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-307 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/bsu-wpe-sites.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/2024\/07\/08154526\/Living-Fossil.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"287\" height=\"153\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bsu-wpe-sites.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/2024\/07\/08154526\/Living-Fossil.jpg 642w, https:\/\/bsu-wpe-sites.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/2024\/07\/08154526\/Living-Fossil-300x160.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 287px) 100vw, 287px\" \/><\/a>For quite some time, researchers weren\u2019t sure of how long these fish could live. Some estimated around 20 years. But in 2021, with more advanced techniques, researchers determined that they could live up to 100 years, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/animals\/fish\/west-indian-ocean-coelacanth-the-once-extinct-lazarus-fish-that-can-live-for-100-years\">through a method similar to counting the rings in a tree stump<\/a>. The coelacanth also is one of the slowest maturing fish species, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/lifestyle\/science\/fish-once-labeled-living-fossil-surprises-scientists-again-2021-06-18\/\">they don\u2019t reach maturity until 55 years old<\/a>.
