Governor Braun\u2019s speech, titled &#8220;The Crossroads of Freedom and Opportunity,&#8221; reflected on Indiana\u2019s settler roots and charted an optimistic vision for the state\u2019s future. There, they met with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indianasenaterepublicans.com\/alexander\" target=\"_blank\">Senator Scott Alexander<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indianahousedemocrats.org\/members\/sue-errington\" target=\"_blank\">Representative Sue Errington<\/a>, giving them a chance to see democracy in action and engage in meaningful dialog. Let us be the risk-takers and trailblazers that Hoosiers deserve in leadership<\/em>.\u201d Thanks to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bsu.edu\/academics\/centersandinstitutes\/cecl\/create\" target=\"_blank\">CREATE<\/a> project and <a href=\"https:\/\/sms.muncie.k12.in.us\" target=\"_blank\">Southside Middle School<\/a>, these students are well on their way to embracing these challenges and shaping Indiana\u2019s future.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>&#8220;Appeals on Wheels&#8221; Brings a Courtroom to Muncie Central<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>On December 2, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.in.gov\/courts\/appeals\/\" target=\"_blank\">Indiana Court of Appeals<\/a> brought its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.in.gov\/courts\/appeals\/arguments\/appeals-on-wheels\/\" target=\"_blank\">Appeals on Wheels<\/a> program to Muncie, hosting a special session of oral arguments for approximately 200 students from Muncie Central, Burris Laboratory School, Wapahani, and Delta High Schools. Following the oral arguments, students had the opportunity to engage directly with the judges during a Q&amp;A session, asking thoughtful questions about the judiciary and legal careers.<\/p>\n<p>Afterward, the learning continued over lunch, where students dined with the justices, attorneys, and local leaders, including Mayor Dan Ridenour, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indianasenaterepublicans.com\/alexander\" target=\"_blank\">Senator Alexander<\/a>, and Delaware County Judge Doug Mawhorr. Judge Kenworthy, emphasized the importance of bringing the judiciary to the people: \u201c<em>We are not the ivory tower that they might have an impression of. His journey into teaching began as a substitute teacher while serving in full-time ministry. He has participated in the Summer Civic Learning Project and the Fall Civic Learning Symposium, which he describes as transformational experiences. \u201c<em>While each has enriched my personal and professional acumen, the relationships I developed through this opportunity will remain my fondest gift<\/em>,\u201d he reflects.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Veatch believes that connecting classroom content to real-life applications is essential for engaging students and fostering civic awareness. He recalls a moment when a student questioned the importance of algebra, assuming it lacked practical value. Veatch drew a connection to the student\u2019s father, a carpenter, demonstrating how algebra is essential in everyday work. \u201c<em>We serve our students best by teaching and showing them how to serve each other with the knowledge and skills we impart in the classroom<\/em>,\u201d he notes.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond the classroom, Veatch emphasizes the importance of teaching as a cornerstone of humanity. \u201c<em>We must teach our children our shared history so they understand what it is to be flawed, ignorant, needy, weak, and lost<\/em>,\u201d he says. \u201c<em>It is then that we can light the candle of knowledge that not only illuminates our human condition but shows us where we can go\u2026 together<\/em>.\u201d He aspires to model lifelong learning and service to others, regardless of the subject he teaches.<\/p>\n<p>Jeff Veatch\u2019s dedication to fostering civic engagement, lifelong learning, and meaningful connections exemplifies the vital role educators play in shaping a better future. Pages serve on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays, with groups scheduled on Wednesdays.<\/p>\n<ol>Program Hours: 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.<\/ol>\n<ol>Location: Indiana Statehouse, Indianapolis.<\/ol>\n<ol>School Excused Absence: Indiana law permits participating students to receive an excused absence for their service.<\/ol>\n<p>Positions are limited and fill quickly, so early applications are encouraged.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How to Apply<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To apply, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.IndianaSenateRepublicans.com\/Page-Program\" target=\"_blank\">Click Here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Students can select their preferred paging day when completing the application.
